No Mercy Extreme Fighting Annihilation XXIII Written by J.R. Gordon
In front of a packed house at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium the twenty-third No Mercy Extreme Fighting show played out with a twelve bout card including two professional bouts and two titles on the line.
Bout one: Ron Willis VS Casey Bernards. After scoring a total of four takedowns Bernards was able to sink in a head and arm triangle choke for the win at 1:24 of round two.
Bout two: Ken Henry VS Phil Campanella. Campanella landed a punch early that knocked down Henry, but on his way to the mat Henry pulled half guard and when Campanella closed in Henry was able to transition to the fight winning armbar at :17 of round one.
Bout three: Tyler Watt VS Justin Hayden. This bout was almost entirely a clinic of grappling with good GNP mixed in. It went all three rounds with each fighter having the advantage at times. When the judges gave their scores it was an unanimous decision win for Justin Hayden.
Bout four: Rick Garcia VS Donell Branch. There was a brief exchange of strikes before Garcia slipped and injured his knee in the fall. By way of verbal submission the victor by TKO at 1:20 of round one was Donell Branch.
Bout five: Travis Aragon VS Kevin Madrid. The fight hit the mat early and from mount Aragon flurried with a strong GNP attack. Madrid rolled face down to avoid the strikes and Aragon sunk in the fight winning RNC at 1:23 of round one.
Bout six: Billy Martin VS Isaiah Gomez. Round one had each landing strong strikes with Gomez getting two takedowns. Round two had Gomez getting another takedown then transitioning to back control off of a scramble for position. From the back Gomez sunk in the RNC for the win at 2:02 of round two.
Bout seven: Mark Padilla VS Brandon Campos. Campos spent nearly all of round one working for a takedown. On the mat the round ended with Padilla working GNP from side control. Round two had Padilla with a bodylock takedown to set up his GNP attack from back control to end the round. Round three had Padilla again getting a takedown to work more GNP and get the TKO win at 1:33 of round three.
Bout eight: Heather Smith VS Wanda Nilson. The first half of round one had Nilson working GNP from the top while the second half played out with Smith working submission attempts and GNP after scoring a sweep to take top control. Round two was mainly spent with Nilson in top position working GNP. Round three started with Nilson trying for a guillotine choke early, but Smith was able to take mount, escape the choke and work GNP to get the TKO win at 2:54 of round three.
Bout nine: James DeHerrera VS Brandon Downing for the No Mercy Extreme Fighting 135 lb. interim title. Round one was an even exchange of striking with the majority of the round spent in the clinch. Round two was more good striking while clinched with Downing able to set up a guillotine choke. DeHerrera was able to pass guard, take back control and then transition to the fight winning armbar at 1:31 of round two.
Bout ten: Scott Cleve VS Levi Magden for the No Mercy Extreme Fighting 160 lb. title. Round one was primarily boxing punctuated by Cleve dropping Smith once. Round two had a brief clinch exchange early with the rest of the round playing out with punch exchanges. Round three was spent with half of the round comprised of boxing and the other half spent with the combatants exchanging strikes while clinched. The judges gave their scores and the unanimous decision win gave the title to Scott Cleve.
Bout eleven: Joe Kelso VS Ian Stonehouse in a professional bout. Round one had even action from both fighters with each working well while clinched and when on the ground. Round two had more even striking with each fighter landing solid strikes. Each fighter was warned for a strike to the spine of the other. Kelso's was an elbow while clinched and Stonehouse's was a knee from side control. Upon the restart after Stonehouse was warned, Kelso ran across the ring looking to land a flying knee, but Stonehouse met him with an overhand right that dropped Kelso and the follow up GNP from Stonehouse got him the win at 2:52 of round two.
Main event: Stephanie Skinner VS Angela Hayes in a professional bout. Each fighter worked strikes from the outside early before they clinched against the cage. From the clinch Hayes worked to the side of Skinner and was able to sink in a standing bulldog choke for the tapout win at 1:53 of round one.
"OF the night" moments:
Slam of the night goes to Isaiah Gomez for his powerful double leg takedown(s) in his bout.
GNP of the night goes to Travis Aragon for his unrelenting flurry that set him up to get the choke-out victory.
Chin of the night goes to Levi Magden for the overhand right that he withstood to keep in the fight. From cageside as it landed it looked to be a sure KO punch, but Magden stayed in the fight until the final bell.
Submission of the night honors are shared by Angela Hayes and Ken Henry. Henry for setting up the armbar while being taken down and getting the win in 17 seconds and Hayes for her slick footwork to get to standing side control to be in position for the standing choke.
KO-TKO of the night goes to Ian Stonehouse for his punch that took his opponent out of the air so he could get the GNP victory.
Fight of the night goes to James DeHerrera and Brandon Downing for their back and forth technical battle that had each fighter showcasing skills that could have finished lesser opponents much earlier in a bout.
